“I left that nut house and was a changed man. I couldn’t be the son of a surgeon and stay in the low life. God changed my life.”

“Praise the Lord!” The crowd was on their feet whooping, clapping and praising God. How long was I on this stage? I thought. The kids were in the back of the sanctuary waiting for church to end.

I feared the worst. Did I say too much? Did I go too far?

Why were Marcus and Matthew sitting so stiff? Oh Lord. What did I do wrong now? We were in Maryland, a long way from Sacramento. There was no one there from my former life.

“Ok, folks. God has blessed. You are dismissed.” Pastor Nickles was ready to go.

People swarmed me. “So what happened next?” Tiffany the praise and worship leader asked.

I gushed and shook my head, moving towards my kids. I didn’t feel like unloading any more.

“What happened?”

“Where'd your children come from?”

“How did you end up here though?”

“I think I remember your Mom. She did my probate when I was at Howard.”

“She did my probate when I was at Hampton,” another AKA said. My mother was heavily involved in AKA recruitment in college and graduate chapters in the DMV area. I’m not surprised she helped so many women become AKAs, I just didn’t know how many of them went to our church.

“Brother Taylor, that was a great testimony. Sometimes we forget where we come from,” Pastor Knickles said.

I was the star of the show. The women wanted to know more. I got a few flirtatious grins. The women were intrigued though. Pastor Nickles snatched me out of their one million follow-up questions. You could tell these people were unchurched. You not supposed to ask all these probing questions after a testimony like that. I had told them more than enough.

“What drugs were you on?”

“You didn’t go to prison though.”

“I used to go to Walker Christian Assembly. Are they still living?”

“Were you a Blood or Crip?”

“How did you get into Optometry?”

“Why didn’t you become a surgeon like your daddy? That would’ve made him proud.”

“Y’all leave him alone. I got plans for him. Y’all gonna run him off. Y’all head home,” the Reverend barked.

“Pastor, he gotta finish on Sunday.” Only a praise and worship leader as good as Tiffany could say that to Pastor.

“I know. I’m trying to invite him back if you shut up,” he laughed.

They turned and left me alone. I was not coming back to tell the rest. They would just have to learn to get to know me. With my sons in tow, I followed Pastor Nickles as he walked out the building. His new wife was already in the car.

“Pastor, I can’t tell more. This was a lot tonight.”

“We've never had so many people tuned in to our live stream as tonight. There were 800 people watching this on a Friday night. 800 people! We're lucky if we get 15 people. Please think about it.”

“Nah, I'm good.”

“Your story may go viral by tomorrow morning.
